"O Irrio Peliqueiro” Mural

Street Art

The origin of this mask has been lost over time, but it could be totemic in nature (according to Vicente Risco). Some stories say that he was a tax collector for the local nobility, while others describe him as a man who rebelled against the Count, and a defender of the people. There are others who think that his origin derives from the local version of Carnival, before also appearing during the festivities honouring the town’s patron saint.

"When I was thinking about painting this mask on such a large wall, I was worried that the image might be too intimidating. But after talking to the residents of Castro Caldelas, I realised that it would be an honour to paint this iconic character for them."
