Winter Way: Monforte-Chantada Stage
The fifth stage of the Winter Way starts in Monforte and ends in Chantada, crossing the municipality of Pantón and covering a distance of 31.6 kilometres. It is considered a medium-difficulty section, as it is 2.5 kilometres long and has a steep gradient.
This stage is a chance to enjoy the natural scenery, wine-growing areas and Romanesque architecture along the way. On reaching O Saviñao, the trail descends to the Romanesque church of San Paio de Diomondi, the former summer palace of the bishops of Lugo, now a pilgrims' hostel. The trail then follows the old Roman road that passed through the Codos de Belesar, former Via XVIII. When the village of Belesar comes into view, the path will then lead to the Miño River bridge, a former ‘bridge of mercy’ that, like the many major bridges on pilgrimage routes, once charged a passage toll.
Crossing the bridge will bring you into Chantada, with a steep ascent and a chance to visit San Salvador de Asma.
