"Leaf and Landscape Labyrinth" Mural
The oak tree is one of the most iconic elements of the landscapes of Galicia. It is a symbol that everyone identifies with, so in this mural, the artist decided to represent the oak by using its most fundamental unit: the leaf.
The concept was to take this very small element and expand it to colossal size, thereby giving a starring role to its distinctive shape and the labyrinth of tiny veins found within its structure. These are depicted like a stained-glass window or a mosaic, with a thousand variations of colours given to the tiny squares that make up this fabric.
The title of this mural makes reference to the labyrinth created by the inescapable natural ecosystem that surrounds all of us, while also alluding to the finely divided fields and farmlands that characterise Galicia’s landscapes, which when viewed from far above, seem to present the same pattern seen on the oak leaf.
This work was created by Cestola na Cachola in 2021, as part of the Ribeira Sacra Landscapes Agreement.
