Folión de Carros (Cart Night) in Chantada
This is a local ethnographic tradition that goes back a long way, although its origins are unknown
For the residents of Chantada, Cart Night (Folión de Carros) is one of the most eagerly awaited celebrations. Each year, various groups build elaborate structures onto traditional carts, and they parade these through the town on the night before the fourth Sunday in August, which coincides with the festival of the local patron saint.
This parade of carts, pulled by teams of cattle or oxen, begins at about 11.00 p.m. The carts are preceded by groups playing traditional music, who \"open\" the Folión. In this festive atmosphere, each cart presents a sort of theatrical performance, demonstrating traditional trades and crafts, or other scenes reflecting everyday life in the past.
Cart Night is an expression of the local culture, with elements of humour, respect, tradition, and nostalgia. Without a doubt, this is a show worth seeing.
This celebration was declared as a Galician Festival of Tourism Interest in 2002, and as an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2019.
Date: 4th Saturday in August
