Church of Santa María de Esgos

Santa María de Esgos is a 16th-century-church, located in the parish of the same name.
Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross and it has a very simple façade. The doorway to the church is through a door that has a rounded arch, with the same rounded moulding running from the jambs around the arch, with no capitals. Over the door is an oculus window and over this a clock. On top is a bell tower with two openings for the bells.
Inside, on the south-facing arm, is a door of the same type as the main door that has been walled up. The nave is lit by two windows on each side. Eight silver lamps hang from the ceiling.
The altarpiece consists of three sections with central niches. The first has barley-sugar columns and the other two strings. It is presided over by a statue of the Virgin. It appears to have been carved at the same time as the church. Other notable images include those of St. Peter and St. Paul, dating from the 17th century.
In the South Chapel is a statue of the Virgin, which came from Saint Eulalia and dates from the 7th century, like the two saints.
Esgos celebrates the feast of Saint Victor on 27th August or the last Sunday of the month. In a niche to the left of the Virgin is a statue of Saint Victor, also 7th-century, who is carrying a head on his shoulders and a similar head under his left arm. There is a belief that this cult comes from the banks of the Ebro River, since this Saint was a hermit and a priest in Oña. In Galicia he is venerated as San Vitoiro. He was beheaded by Abdulrahman III in 950.
