16.3 Pincelo

In addition to its vineyards, these days Pincelo has become a popular location for tourism, with various companies offering boat trips, cultural activities, accommodations, aquatic sports, and winery tours.

PORTOTIDE BRIDGE

This bridge connects the villages of Portotide, on the O Saviñao side of the river, and Pincelo, which is on the other side in the municipality of Chantada. The bridge was originally 35 metres long, but when the Os Peares dam was built, it had to be upgraded to make it higher and longer. This new version of the bridge is 125 metres long, with the original iron structure still preserved in its centre section.

Construction of the dam also caused the village of Portotide to become entirely submerged, and much of the cultivated land around Pincelo was lost as well, with that village now sitting just above the level reached by the flow of the Miño River.

ESTHER TEIJEIRO

One winery that stands out from all the others is Diego de Lemos. It is owned by Esther Teijeiro Lemos (Nogueira de Miño, 1936), who was one of the region’s first female winemakers. She helped establish the Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin (D.O.), and in the year 2000 she became a pioneer of organic wine production in Galicia.

Her intrepid nature and knowledge of winemaking resulted in numerous awards, whether for the wine she produced, for her role as a female entrepreneur, or for environmental excellence. She has also been the subject of numerous newspaper stories, documentaries, and television programmes.

Her winery is of the traditional sort, with its rear storage area excavated into the surrounding stone to ensure optimal temperature and moisture conditions. It offers red wines made using the Mencía grape variety, and white wines using the Godello and Treixadura varieties.
