Church of San Martiño de Nogueira

The Church of San Martiño de Nogueira only keeps its facade from Romanesque style. The rest of the church was altered and the nave was lengthened in 1917
The church is believed to have been built around the year 1195, with a clear influence from the workshop of the cathedral of Ourense, which arrived in the city from Santiago.
The northern gate stands out slightly from the wall. It has semicircular double archivolt with vegetal decoration. The capitals have a vegetal decoration stylized with balls in the corners that recall some of the cathedral of Ourense. The tympanum is flat and lost one of the corbels.
The dependence of the South Gate of the cathedral of Ourense workshop is clearer in the main facade. It has semicircular double archivolt. The capitals have vegetal decoration in the greater arch. In the capitals of the lower left arch, we can see two dragons that wind the necks and bite the long tails of reptile. On the right you can see one of higher quality. It shows a mermaid bird of meticulous features on each face.
Any of these capitals would not be out of place in the cathedral itself. The archivolts have vegetal decoration. The flat jambs end in windowsills which have an angel sitting with outstretched wings and a book opened on his lap which he grasps with his hands. On them rests a lobed arch with intermediate pendants outlined by small balls.
In this interesting work and little known facade took part a master trained in the workshop of the South Gate of the Cathedral of Ourense.
To reach the church of San Martiño we leave from the town hall in Luintra. We have to take the road towards Peñalba until we see a sign to Nogueira on our left. We will arrive in five minutes approximately.
