"The Octopus Cooker" Mural

Street Art

The traditional fairs held in Galicia were events where livestock was traded, along with agricultural products and all types of other important goods such as iron tools, pottery, etc.

However, they were (and still are) opportunities for people to come together, with the octopus cookers having a starring role as they perform their work in full view of their customers. The octopuses are first boiled in large pots, then cut into pieces with scissors and dressed with coarse salt, olive oil, and paprika, before being served on wooden plates.

This mural paying homage to the octopus cookers is very appropriately located on the structure where they do their work during the fairs held in Rubián. It was created in 2016 by Miguel Peralta and Xoana Almar (Cestola na Cachola), as part of the project "A Touch of Colour in Ribeira Sacra".
