Oak Tree at the Casa do Herdeiro

Natural areas

This example of a 500-year-old oak tree is notable for the large bulge at the base of its trunk, which extends upwards for almost 2 metres. This gives the tree a circumference (girth) of almost 10 metres.

It is located in Prado del Carballo close to a small river, surrounded by other trees of its same species and some chestnut trees.

Its most notable characteristic is an enormous bulge about 2 metres high at the base of its trunk, with an abundance of sprouts growing out of it. It is believed that this type of growth results from disorganised cellular growth, similar to a cancer, as a response to one or more injuries or to the presence of some sort of aggressive agent causing stress.

However, given the tree’s age, its overall state of health can be considered to be quite good, since with the exception of a few small hollows in the trunk and some dry branches in its canopy, no major damage can be seen.

Data for the tree (2020):

  • Height (m): 19.20
  • Girth at breast height (m): 9.15
  • Canopy diameter (m): 20.90
  • Estimated age: 500 years
