"Sábado Longo" Mural
Decorated hay carts are part of the tradition known as Sábado Longo (Long Saturday). This is a tradition that goes back many years, celebrated on the night before Easter Sunday.
The young unmarried men from the town get together on Saturday night and look for hay carts. They take them to the church and leave them out in front of it, after decorating the carts with cabbage leaves, flowers, or coloured streamers. They arrange the shafts of the carts to form an "arch", which those attending Sunday mass on Easter morning will have to pass under.
Mural created by Abraham Caride (Abrah) in 2016, as part of the project "A Touch of Colour in Ribeira Sacra".
