Sicenata Pacata

The inscription SICENATA PACATA appears on a granite outcrop the locals call ‘O Penedo das Letras’ (The Rock of Letters).
The meaning of this inscription is unclear, as it appears to be a mixture of two languages. While PACATA is of Roman origin and is known to mean ‘pacified’, the term SICENATA is stranger. It is of Celtic origin and could mean ‘vanquished’, so the epigraph could mean ‘vanquished and pacified’.
The mystery of why this particular site or why two languages are utilised is an ongoing investigation.
