Alder tree at the Maside Manor House

Natural areas

Alder trees, known as ameneiros in Galician, are rarely found with just a single trunk. This is because they typically grow near rivers or mountain streams, where their trunks and branches are frequently broken. This characteristic, along with the fragility of their wood, also means that these trees are usually not particularly large or long-lived. This tree is therefore considered to be an exceptional example of an alder because of its size and shape.

Although it is not known for certain, in view of this tree’s age it is possible that it dates back to the 18th century, which is when the Maside Manor House, considered to be the most important one in the area, was constructed.

Data for the tree (2020):

  • Height (m): 27
  • Girth at breast height (m): 4.35
  • Canopy diameter (m): 15
  • Estimated age: 150 years
  • Ownership: private. This tree is located on the grounds of the Maside Manor House (Pazo de Maside), so it can only be visited with permission. For more information, contact the Pantón Tourism Office.
