Chestnut tree at Souto da Ramigoa

This is a very large example of a pollarded chestnut tree. The first branches appear at a height of about 3.5 metres. Their small diameter reflects, on one hand, the uses that were given to this ancient tree until quite recently, and on the other hand, the lack of vigour that it now has.
It is found in the middle of a small grove formed by other chestnut trees that are much younger and more vigorous, so there is heavy competition for sunlight, nutrients, and space.
Data for the tree (2020):
- Height (m): 13.20
- Girth at breast height (m): 9.23
- Canopy diameter (m): 10.30
- Estimated age: 300 years
