Church of San Martiño de Sabadelle

Churches/Chapels

This Romanesque church was built around the turn of the 13th century, although subsequent alterations led to the loss of elements of this first construction, including the semi-circular recess (apse).

One of these remodelling works included the addition of the sacristy and the chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows with its own belfry and entrance on the south side.

Its main doorway is Romanesque with a semi-circular arch and double archivolt supported by two columns on each side of the entrance. The tympanum lacks any ornamentation.

The belfry entails two 19th century structures: the lower with two semi-circular arches housing the bells and the other, with a single arch with a smaller bell crowned by a Latin cross on a pedestal.

The unique coffered segment of the ceiling is particularly interesting and features Mudejar-style tracery. It also has a sepulchre in the Gospel wall, and the pulpit, although modern, is supported by a Romanesque-style column.
