A Erosa Rock (Legend)

Legends and mythological beings

In the parish of Santa Baia de Adá, in Chantada, there are some unusual granite formations, and a multitude of interpretations and stories have arisen over the years. The most popular are those involving the mouras*.

The legend of A Erosa Rock tells of a moura who was carrying a huge stone on her head. Suddenly she was being pursued, and when she saw an even larger stone on the ground, she left the one she was carrying there so that she could escape. This is how the unusual stone composition came into existence, which we can still see today in the location known as A Pena da Erosa.

This imaginative tale from the local folklore has been portrayed in a mural entitled A Pena da Erosa (A Erosa Rock), located at the Chantada Sports Pavilion. It was created as part of the project A Touch of Colour in Ribeira Sacra.
