Lumeares architectural complex

Historic ensemble

Near the mouth of the river Lumeares you will find the village of the same name, which has a complex of great ethnographic interest formed by the wayside shrine to the Guardian Angel and the wayside cross of A Cruz. The Lumeares bridge is also very close by.

The A Cruz cross, dating from 1766, stands on a base with three steps. At the foot of the column are allegorical images of the Passion of Christ, including a hammer, tongs, and a ladder; the capital is decorated with plants and geomorphic and anthropomorphic shapes and above them a Christ crucified looking south and the Virgin Mary praying towards the north. Because of a series of geometrical lines on the ground around the cross, it is thought that it may have been used as a sundial.

The wayside shrine is close to the church of San Salvador in Lumeares. On a huge block of stone the figure of a guardian angel can be seen protecting a naked child with his right hand and holding a palm frond in his left.
