Pyrenean oak of A Pena

Natural areas

It is so named because it is located in the grounds of the Pazo da Pena, a 16th century manor house, now converted into a tourist establishment.

The Rebolo da Pena (Pena oak) is an exceptional specimen. Its huge trunk grows straight and unbranched up to a height of nearly three metres. The cross is made up of eight thick branches in a radial arrangement and inclined outwards, approximately two metres in length, and further branching out into a large rounded crown almost 25 metres in diameter.

Manzaneda is located in the Central Massif of Ourense. It is a mountainous massif where the Euro-Siberian and Mediterranean floristic kingdoms converge, which, together with the altitudinal variation and the rugged orography, gives rise to a great diversity of habitats and species.

The agroforestry landscape of the massif comprises chestnut and black oak groves, riparian forests, birch woods, pine forests, meadows and scrubland composed mainly of heather, canary broom, granaries, carqueixas (carquesa brooms) and carpazas (rockroses).
