Religious Complex of Marrubio

Churches/Chapels Other historical heritage

The chapel was built dedicated to Saint John, although today San Antonio is venerated on 13th June.

The chapel is very austere. It has a rectangular floor plan, gable roof and a small access atrium. It is surrounded by a masonry wall with an entrance to the front. We highlight its belfry without bell, with only an opening with a semicircular arch and crowned with a cross in stone.

The stone cross is a curious model in Galicia, since it preserves the polychromy, perhaps because of the structure that protects it. It was made in 1778. The image of Christ is under the watchful eye of San Antón at his feet, that holds him for his waist. Under the Christ´s feet, we can see a skull and two tibias. The Virgin Mary is represented on the other side. At the base, there are several figures: staircase, nails and pliers. It represents the descent of the cross of Jesus Christ's body.

The stone cross is protected by a baldachin. On both sides of the entrance door, on the wall that surrounds it, there are two niches which used to be two wayside shrines, that is, a money box available to believers where they could deposit the alms to faster purge their sins.

We leave from the square “Plaza do Mosteiro” in Montederramo, and we have to take the road towards Ourense. In about five minutes, we will turn right to Marrubio. The collection is made up of a small chapel dedicated to Saint John, the stone cross and two wayside shrines which only keep the niches.
