Vieiros Waterfall

A visit to this waterfall allows you to appreciate how the rocky landscape has been shaped and eroded by the flow of the river over time. In addition to hiking routes that will give you an appreciation of the magnificent local landscapes, this is also a prime destination for those who practice the sport of canyoning.
The charms hidden in this corner of the Selmo River make it one of the most frequently visited locations in the O Courel Mountains. The geological process known as the Alpine orogeny has produced a network of narrow river canyons, and these effects have been increased by contact between different types of stone such as quartzite and shales. At this waterfall the water drops for 34 metres, making it one of the highest in the entire territory.
At the top of the waterfall, signs of human influence can be seen in the form of the tireless work that was devoted to building and maintaining two canals, one on each side of the river. These were used to conduct water to nearby pastures, and they were adjusted to the changing flow of the river.
The dynamic contours of the riverbed between the villages of A Seara and Ferramulín have created a route highly appreciated by those who practice the sport of canyoning. In fact, this has been going on for many years, because the route was first set up and publicised in 1997.
This waterfall can only be reached by walking. Park your vehicle in the village of Vieiros, in the car park area provided (do not drive into the village itself). From there, follow the signs to the waterfall, which will take you along an upward sloping trail (be sure to use extreme caution when the trail is wet). USE CAUTION during the winter and during rainy periods. We recommend that you should ask about the condition of the access routes by contacting Quiroga Municipal Hall (982 42 80 01) or the Quiroga Tourism Office (982 435 125).
