Budián Entroido

Festivals

In the parish of San Romao de Acedre, Budián was the very heart of the parish's Carnival festivities. It was the spot of the Budián Entroido (Carnival), renowned for its famous Brancos (couples) and the proclaimed Carnival King (the Farranquí).

A cloth full of wool was placed at the entrance of the premises to announce the beginning of the festivities. On the big day, the pairs of Brancos and Farranquís would walk around all the villages of the parish.
The custom had been to perform a series of plays, which might be about weddings, childbirth or even the distribution of inherited estates, all with a touch of humour and surrealism.

In addition to this Budián Carnival, neighbouring parishes had another very similar celebration, but with certain differences. It was the Arribada Carnival, in the parish of San Fiz de Cangas, which brought together the neighbours of Santo Andrés de Següín and Santo Estevo de Espasantes. That carnival featured Ladies and Gentlemen, or Mázcaras, very similar to the Brancos. Yet there was also El Meco or Farramplán, which are both very similar to the Farranquí in Budián.

Following a long period of absence, the residents of Arribada revived the Carnival in 1997 with their participation in the parade of O Castro de Ferreira.
