Old Chocolate Factory

Other historical heritage

On the banks of the Cabalar River and next to the original Roman bridge, you will find the remains of this factory that operated at the turn of the 20th century.

Built by José Salgado in 1889, the factory harnessed the power of the Cabalar River to grind cocoa, and also had two flour mills and even a turbine for electricity production.

José Salgado produced his chocolates under the brand name ‘Royal’, and in 1910 he decided to emigrate to Argentina, taking his chocolate mills and mixers with him to Buenos Aires, where he opened Chocolates Fénix in 1918. The company was declared ‘Supplier of the Royal House of Spain’ in 1920 by Alfonso XIII and is still operating today in the same place.

However, the building on the Cabalar River gradually fell into disuse, and is now abandoned and in ruins.
