Church of San Vicente de Pombeiro

This lovely church is on the right bank of the river Sil just before it runs into the river Miño. It is surrounded by exuberant vegetation in a place chosen by the hermits of old, of whom there are some remains, such as several anthropomorphic tombs.

As in normal in many churches in the region, in the 10th century, San Vicente de Pombeiro formed part of a monastery, of which very few signs remain today.

The church was built between the 12th and 13th centuries, although subsequently it was considerably remodelled. It has a basilica floor plan, with three naves and three semicircular apses. The unusual main door is flanked by two buttresses. Above a plain tympanum, two pairs of columns hold up its slightly pointed archivolts. At the top are six arches decorated with human heads and geographical shapes, forming what is called a rain guard. The north and south walls also have interesting doors. The north door is similar to the main door, while above the south door is a decorated rose window.

The west façade has a circular tower topped by a square bell tower with a small cupola. It is possible to see the interior of the church by looking in through a window in the north wall. Inside are Renaissance and baroque altarpieces and the remains of some 15th century murals.
