Church of San Facundo de Ribas de Miño
The whole monument of San Facundo de Ribas de Miño receives first prize of the Association of Architects of Galicia as best restoration project carried out in the autonomous community in 1998.
San Facundo was founded in the 12th century to take in pilgrims who were en route to Santiago de Compostela. After the destruction of the bridge over the river Miño in Portomarín by Queen Urraca, the Benedictine monks came here to ferry the pilgrims across the river by boat. When the bridge was rebuilt, travellers who could not pay the toll for the Portomarín bridge took refuge at San Facundo.
In 1620, it became a priory of the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Montederramo.
The complex is set in a very beautiful spot, close to the river Miño and surrounded by vineyards. It was declared a national monument in 1982.
The most interesting part is the church. It has a semicircular apse and a noteworthy vault. Its 15th century murals have also been preserved. On the north wall is Saint Christopher with baby Jesus. On his belt are the heads of three people, who represent the travellers that Saint Christopher helped to cross the river.
There is also a Saint Bartholomew with half of his skin hanging off as a reminder of his martyrdom: he was skinned alive. He has one foot on a monster that is attached to a chain. Another picture shows Saint Francis of Assisi. Representations of the crucifixion, the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and the virgin breastfeeding baby Jesus have also been preserved.

Don't miss!
We recommend you visit the nearby Chapel of Loio, as well as the town of Portomarín and its church of San Xoán. Both visits can be very illustrative about the constructive styles of the religious heritage of the area.
